Around 8:30 a.m. local time, two small planes crashed in midair at Marana Regional Airport in Arizona, resulting in the verified deaths of two individuals. Two individuals were on board a Lancair 360 MK II and a Cessna 172S when they crashed.
One plane was able to land, but the other crashed close to the runway and caught fire. The two passengers were unharmed, however the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed that one aircraft was responsible for the deaths.
For the duration of the investigation, the airport—which does not have an air traffic control tower—is closed. Marana officials hailed responders for their prompt action and offered their condolences. Future upgrades may result from the airport’s participation in the FAA’s Air Traffic Control Tower Program.
