Following the Challenger space shuttle disaster in 1986, the crew members’ corpses were discovered amidst the spacecraft’s debris. The bodies of the seven astronauts—Judith Resnik, Gregory Jarvis, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Michael J. Smith, and Christa McAuliffe—were among the wreckage recovered from the ocean floor.
Following recovery efforts, the bodies were transported to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware for identification and examination. After being identified, the remains were given to the family for a private funeral or cremation.
