My world fell apart when my husband, Charles, died in a terrible accident. I battled to keep myself together for three years, not for myself but for Maggie, my six-year-old daughter. When grief threatened to overwhelm me, she was my source of strength and motivation to keep going.
Jacob then entered our life.
I felt secure once more because of his kind demeanor and friendly grin. Maggie flourished in his company, laughing more than she had in years, and he loved her. I gradually gave myself permission to think that happiness was still achievable.
We got married two months ago. I genuinely believed that we had finally discovered the missing piece and were starting to reconstruct our lives. However, that illusion was shattered by Maggie’s naive remarks.
One night, she hugged her pet rabbit and paused as I put her to bed.
“Mom?” she muttered.
“Yes, dear?” I brushed her hair back and asked.
As though she was worried about being overheard, she lowered her voice. “New-Dad instructed me to hide something from you. Is that acceptable?
My heart was racing.
“Baby, you never have to hide anything from me. What was it he said?
She shifted the blanket around. “While you were at work yesterday, I woke up early from my snooze. Since New-Dad had promised that we would play PlayStation, I went to find him. But I was unable to locate him. Then I noticed him and a lovely woman wearing a red dress emerge from the basement. I was told not to tell you by him.
I felt a chill of fear creep over me.
Our basement served only as a place to store old tools and cartons. Why would Jacob go down there with another woman?
I confronted him that evening while he was on the couch, browsing through his phone.
I answered calmly, “Maggie saw you yesterday.” “You were with a woman,” she said. Would you mind explaining?
A flutter of his face—panic? Feeling guilty? Then he laughed, though.
“Oh, that? She works as an interior decorator. I planned to renovate your basement as a surprise.
Later, he led me downstairs, revealing a beautifully redone space with fresh paint, new furniture, and cozy lighting. It was breathtaking, but something still felt wrong.
That night, while Jacob slept, I scrolled through his old social media photos. My stomach dropped when I saw a picture from two years ago. There he was, his arm wrapped around a blonde woman in a red dress.
The next morning, I showed Maggie the photo.
Her eyes widened. “That’s her, Mommy.”
I needed proof. After Jacob left for work, I installed security cameras in the living room and basement. Then, I told him I had to leave town for a work trip and took Maggie to my mother’s house.
I was watching the live video feed from my hotel room that night when I got the following notification: Motion detected in the basement.
When I tapped the screen, my worst suspicions came true. Jacob stood there kissing the blond woman while cradling her in his arms.
I got home early the following morning and waited in the driveway as he escorted her to her vehicle. His face became white at the sight of me.
“Oh! Are you at home? He stumbled. “I mentioned this designer to you.”
“Really?” I folded my arms. “Do all designers visit late at night?”
The woman grinned. “At last, she understands.” She looked across at Jacob. “Stop acting like that.”
Jacob said nothing.
“Leave, both of you,” I said resolutely.
I packed up his possessions and left them at a building site that afternoon, allowing the workmen to take what they desired. Desperate to see Maggie, I then took a car to my mother’s place.
Later, I gave her a tight embrace as we were eating ice cream. “You did the right thing by informing me, sweetie. I’m really pleased with you.
She smiled. “Mommy, no more secrets.”
Knowing that we were free made me happy.
Sometimes, the hardest truths set you free to build the life you truly deserve.
