Kevin had no idea that one typical Tuesday would forever alter his life. The day started off as usual, with emails, meetings, and thoughts of Taco Tuesday, until his phone rang out of the blue. The caller ID said, “Home,” which was odd because Laurel usually only texted him when she needed something. As he answered, a tiny knot of anxiety formed in his stomach. “Daddy?” came a small, unsure voice, and he instantly recognized Alice, his five-year-old daughter. She didn’t usually call him at work, so the hesitance in her voice raised red flags in his mind. “Alice? What’s wrong, sweetheart?” she said hesitantly, “Mommy packed a suitcase,” adding, “She said she needed to ‘be a big girl’ and told me to wait for you.”
Kevin felt the world tilt slightly. His fingers tightened around the phone. “Where is Mommy now?”
“She left,” Alice whispered. “She told me she loves me and then got in a taxi.”
Kevin’s heart beat in his chest. “Remain put, my love. Daddy is currently on his way home.
Not even remembering to inform his boss that he had an emergency, he reached for his car keys. Thoughts and worst-case scenarios filled the drive home. When he finally pulled into the driveway, the house was eerily quiet. The usual warmth that came with stepping inside was gone. Instead, an empty stillness settled over everything.
“Where’s Mommy? When is she coming back?” “Where’s Mommy?” “Where’s Mommy?” “I don’t know, sweetheart. But I’m here. I promise.” As he carried Alice into the kitchen, his eyes fell on a white envelope propped up against the fruit bowl, with his name written across the front in Laurel’s handwriting. He took a deep breath and opened it, saying, “I need to take some time for myself. Please take care of Alice and tell her I love her.” —Laurel That was it. There was no explanation, no conversation, just a sudden departure. They had their ups and downs, but she had never expressed a desire to leave, and definitely not in this way. Over the course of the following few days, Kevin contacted friends, family, and even Laurel’s coworkers in an attempt to piece together what had happened. Gradually, it became evident that Laurel had been preparing for this for a while; she had quit her job, discreetly removed herself from social media, and even taken money out of their joint savings account.
At first, Kevin was overcome with rage and bewilderment. How could she do this to Alice? To him? But there was no use in asking questions that would never be answered, so he threw all of his energy into making Alice feel safe and loved. Their new routine included pancake breakfasts, bedtime stories, and ice cream dates. He found himself doing small things he had never considered before, like braiding Alice’s hair, learning the names of all of her stuffed animals, and assisting her in choosing her school attire. One evening, as they were flipping through TV channels, Alice exclaimed, “Daddy, look!”
Kevin sat frozen, watching as she took a deep breath and began to sing. Her voice was filled with emotion, raw and powerful, filling the room. He had never heard her sing like that before—he hadn’t even known she had wanted to sing in the first place.
In that moment, he understood. Laurel hadn’t left out of anger or sadness. She had left to chase something deeply personal, something she had never shared with him.
That night, his phone buzzed with a message:
I know you saw it. I knew you’d try to stop me.
Kevin stared at the words for a long time before finally setting his phone down. There was no going back.
Rather, he concentrated on moving forward—with Alice. He began the process of ensuring that their home life was stable, adjusting to being a single parent, and creating a life where Alice felt secure. He even reconnected with old friends after realizing that he needed a support system just as much as Alice did. “Daddy, is Mommy coming back?” Alice asked him as they were preparing breakfast one morning. “No, sweetheart. She’s following her dream. But she loves you very much.” Alice nodded thoughtfully. “Okay. Can we get ice cream later?” Kevin grinned, ruffling her hair.
As sunlight flooded through the kitchen window, infusing the room with warmth, Kevin recognized that while things hadn’t gone the way he had intended, he and Alice were finding their own rhythm, their own new beginning. And maybe, just maybe, that was enough.
