Subject: I’m worried if my joke about my daughter-in-law at Christmas dinner went badly. Any ideas?
I believe I made Christmas a disaster. During supper, I said to my daughter-in-law, Claire, “It appears that someone has overindulged this holiday!” Be careful, or you’ll have to buy new clothes. She became agitated, sobbed as she left the table, and I later discovered her packing.
She said that I made fun of her body image issues and embarrassed her in front of the family. My son Ben was also incensed, claiming that even when I don’t want to, I constantly disparage Claire. The entire family is now upset because they left. Was my mistake truly that bad? Do you think I should have apologized sooner?
