Star Aisha Tyler discusses her thoughts on Friends’ seeming lack of diversity on the show’s 30th anniversary. As the first Black actor to have a regular role on the show, Tyler made history. He portrayed Charlie Wheeler, a professor of palaeontology who developed feelings for Ross.
Because everyone on Friends was welcoming and respected her, Tyler felt at home. However, she acknowledges that even in its early run, the show’s lack of diversity was a major issue. According to Tyler, “it really lacked diversity for a show that was set in the heart of Manhattan.”
The show’s creators, including Marta Kauffman, have now acknowledged that there wasn’t enough diversity and expressed regret for not doing more to highlight New York City’s diversity. Better still, in an effort to encourage greater diversity, Kauffman has committed $4 million to assist African and African American studies at Brandeis University.
Tyler’s remarks highlight the long-standing bias in the entertainment industry, which prioritizes white stories above other viewpoints. Tyler remarked, “That’s just the mindset in Hollywood for a long time.” She commended David Schwimmer for advocating for greater diversity on the program throughout its initial run, despite these issues.

Although Friends continues to receive accolades for its impact on popular culture, its lack of diversity continues to be a major grievance. However, cast members’ opinions on the show’s influence, such as those of Aisha Tyler, can also spark fresh discussions about diversity and involvement in the entertainment industry.
