My birth family just discovered me after I was adopted as a baby, and their secret changed everything.
When I was a newborn, I was left in an alley. Not a word. No hints. Wrapped in a small blanket, left there. I was placed in foster care and eventually adopted by the most devoted parents imaginable because no one ever came forward to claim me. I was content and liked, so I never doubted my position in the world.
However, I recently began to consider my future children after getting engaged. What if kids were born with a disease I was unaware of? I had no family history. In the belief that it would only be for my records, I took the 23&Me test.
I made a single error. I unintentionally exposed myself.
And so I was discovered by my birth family.
First, a man named Daniel sent me a message. He was straightforward.
- “Hey… We may be related, I believe. In fact, I believe I am your brother. * A shiver went through my body. A sibling? After I hesitantly replied, someone else messaged me in a matter of hours. A female. Emily.
- “Please, we must speak. Something is important for you to know. * I consented to a video conversation with them out of curiosity and, to be honest, a little fear. My stomach turned over when their faces appeared on my screen. They resembled me. The same nose. The same eyes. It could not be denied. Then the true shock hit.
Daniel’s voice was full with emotion as he replied, “We didn’t know you were alive.”
I said, “What do you mean?”
Emily inhaled deeply. * “Our parents informed us that you passed away at birth.”
My heart stopped beating.
“They lied?” I exclaimed.
Daniel gave a somber nod. * “They weren’t merely lying. They did a terrible thing. *
Then they revealed to me the devastating, heart-breaking reality.
I wasn’t left on purpose. I was captured.
by my own parents.
They already had too many children. Too much tension. And they chose to dump me rather than officially give me up.
like garbage.
I thought I was having trouble breathing. My life-givers had also attempted to remove me from it.
- Emily muttered, “We looked for answers for years.” Mom and Dad wouldn’t discuss you. They cut us off whenever we asked. We were unaware that they abandoned you to perish in an alley. * I felt like screaming. Sob. Throw up. I inquired, “Where are they now?” Daniel paused. * “A few years ago, Dad passed away. Mom is still living. *
- “Is she aware that you located me?” *
Emily nodded. *”And she wants to meet you.”*
A deep, dark rage bubbled in my chest. The woman who abandoned me—who let her own children believe I was dead—wanted a reunion?
I wasn’t sure what I’d do next. But one thing was clear.
I was never the lost one.
They were.
